A centrally located, economical and creative city
Łódź first appears in writing in 1332, in a document issued by Duke Władysław of Łęczyca, and received town rights from King Władysław II Jagiełło in 1423. As of 31 December 2025 it has 639,890 residents. In the 2023/24 academic year, 65,297 students were enrolled across 17 higher education institutions in the city.
A place in a public university hall costs 550-950 PLN per person per month for 2026-2027. A bed in a triple room is 640 zł; doubles run 550-900 zł (University of Łódź 550-850 zł depending on the hall, Lodz University of Technology 600 zł in halls III-IX and 750 zł in halls I and II, Medical University of Lodz 640-900 zł). Singles are 710-1500 zł, but at the University of Łódź they are allocated only on medical or disability grounds, so a first year should budget the double room figure. Deposits are separate: 700 zł at the Medical University, 1000 zł for foreign students at the Technical University, two months rent at the University of Łódź.
The rest of the monthly budget, in euros: rent 127-278, food 161-218, transport 16-19, and a typical all in figure of 481 euros. That figure assumes a student living in a university hall or a shared flat, in a room for two, cooking at home most days and using a discounted student transport pass, with bills, phone, study materials and ordinary social spending included.
Purpose built private residences (Student Depot and Basecamp) ask 1390-2650 PLN per person per month for 2026/2027, with all utilities and wifi included, laundry charged separately at Basecamp, and one month deposit standard. Your own room in a shared flat was advertised at 570-1150 zł in September 2026, typically 600-1000 zł, and bills are usually not included: add roughly 200-300 zł unless the advert says otherwise. A self contained one room flat, a kawalerka, runs 1100-2100 zł, typically 1300-1800 zł, before bills; budget 200-600 zł more for building charges, heating and electricity, and one to two months deposit. A two room flat is 1600-3000 zł, typically 1900-2500 zł, bills again extra; a 2200 zł flat split between two people works out at roughly 1100 zł each plus bills.

Textiles built the 19th century city. In 1839 Poland's first steam powered loom began operating at Ludwik Geyer's White Factory (Biała Fabryka). On 23 December 1898 the first electric trams in the Russian partition of Poland entered service here. In June 1905, during the June Days of the 1905 revolution, roughly 100,000 unemployed workers went on mass strike in what is known as the Łódź insurrection. On 10 December 1939 Nazi Germany renamed the city Litzmannstadt after General Karl Litzmann, and governor Friedrich Übelhör ordered a ghetto the same day; it was sealed on 30 April 1940 holding 163,777 people, around 210,000 Jews passed through it, and it was liquidated in August 1944. When Soviet forces entered the city on 19 January 1945, 877 Jews were still alive. With Warsaw in ruins, Łódź informally and temporarily took over the functions of the capital. The University of Łódź and Lodz University of Technology were both established by decree on 24 May 1945, and the National Film School (PWSFTviT) opened on 8 March 1948.
Getting around means trams and buses, run mainly by MPK Łódź Sp. z o.o. Trams have run since 1898, and as of August 2026 the network covers 124.1 km of line with 24 tram lines, including regional services out to Pabianice, Zgierz, Konstantynów Łódzki and Ozorków. Mainline trains leave from Łódź Fabryczna, and the city airport is Łódź Władysław Reymont Airport, opened as Lublinek on 13 September 1925. Students of institutions on the ministry's register travel at the reduced fare with a valid student card or the mLegitymacja studencka in the mObywatel app, and students of foreign institutions with a valid ISIC card. The reduced fare is exactly half the standard one: a zone 1 single up to 20 minutes is 2.20 zł instead of 4.40 zł, a 24 hour ticket 9.00 zł instead of 18.00 zł, a 30 day all lines personal pass 84.00 zł instead of 168.00 zł, 90 days 207.00 zł instead of 414.00 zł, and 12 months 745.00 zł instead of 1490.00 zł.
The state institutions we list in Łódź are the University of Łódź and Lodz University of Technology, both founded under the same decree of 24 May 1945; the Medical University of Lodz; and the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music. On the private side we list the University of Social Sciences (Społeczna Akademia Nauk), WSB Merito University in Lodz, and the University of Humanities and Economics in Lodz (AHE).
