Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is a state university founded in 1635 and based in Budapest, Hungary.
The university's focus areas are informatics, the sciences, law and the humanities. Those four areas point in different directions: applicants drawn to software and computing look to informatics, those heading toward mathematics and the natural sciences look to the sciences, and students planning a social science route look to law and the humanities.
For teaching in English, ELTE offers a wide range of English-taught bachelor's and master's programs, including informatics and the sciences. For a student who does not speak Hungarian, that means a path in English is open at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
In international rankings, ELTE is placed 595 in the QS 2027 edition, in the 801-1000 band in the THE 2026 edition, and in the 501-600 band in the ARWU 2026 edition.
